As part of their regular work, Edson Ramírez Heredia, audio engineer at Sony Music 5020 studios, digitized the tapes to preserve the record company’s musical heritage, when discovered “I don’t think about you anymore”, an unreleased song that was recorded by José José in London in the late 1970s.
The classic tessitura, the romanticism that he gave to each interpretation and, in this case according to the story, the pain that love sometimes causes, dress the theme with which The Prince of Song once again demands his space in the musical field.
“We were working on the digitalization process to have the material in the cloud, when suddenly, when taking the tape on which the album came What’s done is donewhich was recorded in London on November 9, 1978, had two songs: “I No Longer Think of You” and “Love for Both of Us”; I realized that the second one had already been heard and the recording was there, but when I reviewed “Ya no pienso en ti”, I realized that it had never come out, that it was unreleased,” said the engineer when explaining in an interview with MILENIO how he discovered the song with which José José once again sounds like his best days.
After The discovery, which occurred a year ago, “I immediately informed the record company and the necessary investigation was carried out to confirm that we were indeed facing an unprecedented event,” added Charlie García, vice president of A&R at Sony Music Mexico.
“It was an extraordinary experience, because when you put the tape in and hit play on the machine, you can even hear the musical director’s instructions, when he says: ‘One, two, three’, and then you hear the piano, the bass and the voice of The Prince comes in,” the executive shares.
To achieve the discovery highlights the engineer’s knowledge of José José’s music, same that he attributes to a family legacy.
“I have known José José’s music since I was a child, my parents used to play his records at home, so that helped me to know that this song had not been heard,” The engineer says,
Due to the effect of time, more than 40 years ago, the theme had to be restored. Heredia explains that “analog tools were used to preserve the clarity of the singer’s voice, who recorded the song in a single take with live musicians.”
The executive adds: “A tape degrades over time, so it was a very meticulous restoration job, because it sounded old and had to be worked on. It was a tape that was almost 50 years old and that’s why we thought of Memo Gil for the production, in which we only replaced one instrument, the bass, which was played by Pancho Ruiz, one of the best bassists.”.
They are looking for the author
As part of the legal process that must be done To publish a composition, the author must also be notified, but since in this case the name is unknown, the record company notified the editors.
“We followed the process as it should be done legally; we spoke with all the publishers and shared the issue with the Society of Authors and Composers of Mexico (SACM) in order to locate the author, but to this day it has not appeared. We are going to go out on the street with the subject and what a thrill if the author appears, But we want people to hear it and feel it; legally everything is correct and we have taken all the necessary considerations for this matter,” Garcia said.
Anel even cried
The interpreter’s family was also notified: “We contacted the heirs and notified them; last week Anel was here – at the record company – listening to the song and she even cried, because the song is very emotional.”
