Environmental permit for Mall of the Netherlands approved – RetailTrends

The municipality of Leidschendam-Voorburg has approved the environmental permit for the renovation of the Leidsenhage shopping centre. Under the name Mall of the Netherlands, the renovated shopping centre should open its doors in early 2019.

The renovation should give the shopping center a ‘completely new identity’, says designer MVSA Architects. With a wide variety of retailers, small shops and flagship stores in combination with restaurants and a cinema, Mall of the Netherlands responds to changing consumer needs, according to the developer. “The concept is based on the idea of one gesture, one design, one identity”, says MVSA director Roberto Meyer.

The demolition work on the shopping centre on the edge of The Hague recently started. The new shopping centre is to become the ‘largest and most modern’ in the Netherlands. Mall of the Netherlands will have around 320 shops and should attract twelve to fourteen million visitors per year. The expansion of around thirty thousand square metres will cost 470 million euros.

Dozens of entrepreneurs have now left Leidsenhage, the Leidschendam-Voorburg council recently announced. They have moved to another municipality or stopped altogether. In addition, another hundred companies have had to temporarily relocate because of the demolition work.
