The gambling tax will not increase as quickly as was previously intended. The cabinet has decided on an intermediate step to 34.2 percent in 2025, sources report to our political editors. The rate is currently 30.5 percent. From 2026, the rate for the gambling tax will then go to the 37.8 percent that was agreed in the main agreement.
The cabinet will announce this tomorrow on Budget Day. The interim step was decided to give the sector more time to adapt. Furthermore, the increase in gambling tax would also have direct consequences for the contribution of the Dutch lottery to sports. Sports umbrella organization NOC*NSF previously warned that this would lead to a dramatic loss of income.
Holland Casino angry
Holland Casino was also previously angry about the increase in the gambling tax. The company is already not doing very well financially and fears major losses if the measure goes through. But in an initial response, the casino company states that the gradual increase will also cause a lot of pain.
“If it is true that the gambling tax will increase by as much as a quarter in two years, that is a hard blow. It means that we will have to take drastic measures in our internal operations to be able to absorb this cost item of tens of millions of euros,” a spokesperson said.
“Holland Casino will be consulting with the responsible ministries in the coming period to find a way forward in which the company can continue to contribute sustainably to the safe and responsible provision of games of chance. That will be quite a task.”
