If you have kids at home, you’ll want to lunge for the parental controls. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is f-bombing its way to streaming following a smashing success at the box office this summer.
The R-rated Marvel sequel, starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as their comic book alter egos, will become available rent/purchase on digital platforms, such as Prime Video and Apple TV+, on Oct. 1. It will release on 4K Blu-ray/DVD on Oct. 22.
The digital and physical releases will feature dozens of bonus featurettes, including “Finding Madonna: Making the Oner,” in which director Shawn Levy and Reynolds break down the historic scene together; “Practical Approach: Celebrating the Art of Ray Chan,” a tribute to the longtime Marvel contributor; “Loose Ends: The Legacy Heroes,” which sees the cast and crew go through the film’s many mind-blowing cameos; and, of course, a hilarious gag reel.
The Prime Video digital release will also come with exclusive features, including Deadpool doodles, pros and cons and fact-checked insider trivia. Meanwhile, the 4K UHD Blu-ray will be released in a national sku and special limited-edition SteelBooks®, featuring exclusive custom art and packaging. Fans will see red and yellow with two SteelBook versions to choose – one version spotlights Deadpool and the other showcases Wolverine.
The long-awaited Marvel sequel crossed $1 billion at the global box office this summer, overtaking 2019’s wildly successful “Joker.” It’s notable because it ushers the comic book characters that were previously licensed to 20th Century Fox into Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe. Ticket sales for the tentpole were stratospheric because ardent fans wanted to watch the film as early as possible to avoid plot twists, major cameos and see Jackman’s gruff mutant Logan emerge from retirement.
In his review of the film, Variety film critic Peter DeBruge describes it as an “irreverent send-off to Fox’s X-Men movies,” writing that it “tests Disney standards while giving superhero fans closure on nearly a quarter-century of variable-quality Marvel fare produced across town.”
