Despite their precarious position in the Premier League table, Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has promised that the team will continue to believe in and fight for their survival ‘until the last second’ against Brentford on the final day of the season. The Whites find themselves in the bottom three after a run of difficult fixtures against top four sides, which saw Leeds concede early goals in each and picked up red cards in their last two against Arsenal and Chelsea.

Speaking about those games, Meslier told the club’s official website: “The last three games were difficult against good teams, big teams. We tried to give the maximum and unfortunately and we finished two games with 10 players. It was difficult, but we didn’t give up. We tried to win the games, we tried to get some points, but this can happen in football. In this moment we have to stay strong and together, because we are one team.”

Continuing to talk about the final fixtures, the 22-year-old goalkeeper spoke about the team’s belief and spirit, refuting claims that they have been broken by their recent run. “We will fight for the club, for the staff and for the fans. The league will finish at Brentford on 95 minutes and until the last second, the team will believe we can stay up.

“We will give more than 100 per cent to stay up, to try and win against Brighton and Brentford, it’s not over. Teams have to play, teams have to win. For me, we will give the maximum from ourselves until the end, it’s our mentality”

Even if Leeds win both their final games, there is a scenario where they cannot stay up. That’s due to the fact that Burnley have an extra game to play and only have to match Leeds’ points tally in their final three, due to their superior goal difference. As such, Leeds will hope to gain as many points as they can but they need to hope that Burnley’s opponents take as many points away from them as they can.
