Belgian footballer Dries Mertens will most likely continue his career at Galatasaray. The Turkish club of Orange international Patrick van Aanholt says on the website that it is in talks with the 35-year-old attacker, who recently left Napoli. Mertens was unable to reach an agreement with the management of the Italian club about extending his expiring contract.
Mertens left Naples after nine years as the club’s top scorer of all time. The 105-time international of the ‘Red Devils’, who broke through at AGOVV and then played for FC Utrecht and PSV, scored 148 goals for Napoli. Mertens was named an honorary citizen of Naples this week for all his services to the club.
Galatasaray also wants to attract Lucas Torreira in addition to Mertens. The Uruguayan midfielder arrived in Istanbul on Saturday to complete his move from Arsenal to Galatasaray. The Turkish top club wants to compete for the title again after a disappointing season, in which it finished in thirteenth place. At the beginning of this week, Galatasaray already attracted Norwegian midfielder Fredrik Midtsjø from AZ.
