Met Office extends weather warning with heavy rain expected on Sunday

Thunderstorms followed by heavy rain are forecast to sweep across parts of the UK with the potential to cause major travel disruption as weather warnings are issued for the entire weekend.

After a week of warm, dry conditions for many with temperatures reaching the mid-20s in places, the weather is taking a dramatic turn.

The Met Office already had a yellow weather warning in place for the whole of Saturday for the southwest of England, most of Wales and central England for thunderstorms and heavy showers.

Now a second yellow weather warning for heavy rain is in place for Sunday.

Met Office meteorologist Amy Bokota said: “We start to get a second system rising from the south as we head in towards the early hours of Sunday.

“There is a warning in force for this area of rain as well. And this one is slightly different from the one on Saturday.

“This is a rain warning as a opposed to a thunderstorm warning. And we’ll see more widespread cloud and more places will see rainfall as well.

“We could see some spray and perhaps some difficult travelling conditions through Sunday as well.”

Difficult driving conditions, temporary road closures and significant delays or cancellations to trains and buses due to flooding are predicted.

Forecasters said there is also a small chance some rural communities will become temporarily cut off by flooded roads and face the possibility of power cuts.

It will remain fairly mild on Sunday with temperatures in the high teens to early 20sC for much of the UK, muggy in the southeast of England.

Along the northeast coast of England, cloud coming off the North Sea will mean temperatures dip with a maximum of 15°C but there will be sunshine in Northern Ireland and Scotland.

The Environment Agency has three flood warnings in place for Somerset and Gloucestershire and 31 flood alerts.

Commenting on the forecast on Saturday, Ms Bokota said: “Low pressure is beginning to take dominance from the south giving quite an unsettled picture across the southern half of the UK across the end of the weekend.

“We do have a thunderstorm warning in force for quite a large area covering parts of Wales, southwest England and central southern England as well.

“It’s a large area but not everywhere will see a thunderstorm, it’s the hit and miss nature of thunderstorms.

“One place could see torrential downpours, hail, gusty winds and just down the road it could be a fine and sunny day.”

Saturday’s thunderstorm warning is from 1am until midnight with the potential for spray and sudden flooding, which could mean some difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

Where there is flooding or lightning strikes, there is also a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services, some damage to buildings and even power cuts.

Further north, there will be an east/west split with rain and drizzle and breezy conditions on the east coast, particularly in eastern Scotland but brighter in the west.

Temperatures could get up to 20°C in the west of Scotland and as high as 25°C in parts of Kent where they avoid the thundery downpours.

The weekend warnings come after a tornado swept through Aldershot in Hampshire on Friday evening causing “lots of damage”.

The Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO) said it tracked the column of air moving about 1.2 miles (2km) through the Aldershot area shortly after 12:00pm.

According to BBC South Weather, the rare weather event caused “lots of damage” to property.
