The sports holiday is approaching – few options left in Lapland for last-minute travelers

With less than two weeks left until the sports holiday in southern Finland, it is becoming difficult to find travel tickets and accommodation in the ski resorts in northern Finland. Many families with children opened their eyes to domestic travel during the corona years and the trend seems to be in place: the travel industry in Lapland had a record year last year and the number of overnight stays increased by seven percent.

Can you then go on a skiing holiday at short notice?

– It can be difficult to find the desired accommodation during the sports holiday week at the most popular ski resorts, but it is not completely sold out. A quick search for a cabin for four people yields around ten objects at several different ski centers in the north. If you are flexible, there is accommodation available, says the manager Nina Forsell.

She represents the interest organization Lapin tälääelinkeinon liitto and confirms that there is a great demand for Lapland trips right now. Over 3.3 million overnight stays were recorded in 2023, just over half of which were foreign tourists.

Tourists from Europe are arriving in Kittilä in droves, often with direct flights from Great Britain, Spain, Germany or the Netherlands. The domestic travelers drive a car or take the train.

Prices vary

HBL has checked the situation at some popular ski resorts in Lapland:

Levi in the village of Sirkka has an overnight capacity of 25,000 beds. During week 8, there are occasional vacant apartments in alpine cabins and townhouses at normal prices, which in high season means 1,100–1,300 euros depending on the standard and distance to services.

On the other hand, there is a larger selection of luxury apartments, for example in a newly built alpine house next to the ski slope. There, a family with 2–4 children can expect a week’s accommodation to cost over 4,000 euros. But then two lift passes are included in the weekly price and you can ski right up to the front door.

Most sports holiday travelers want to ski in some form, but other activities are also of increasing interest. The picture was taken on the slalom slope in Levi in November.

At the neighboring mountain Ylläs there are two villages, Äkäslompolo and Ylläsjärvi, which have a combined capacity of 20,000 beds in cottages and 4,000 beds in hotels.
