Within the framework of International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalistshe United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turkstressed the growing insecurity that journalists face around the world and called for a greater action to protect their lives and rights.
Volker Türk assured that impunity is one of the critical factors that allows the perpetuation of these crimes.“The widespread impunity that usually follow the attacks on journalists impairs the search for facts and undermines justice,” he said.
The commissioner highlighted the fundamental role of journalistswhom he described as “the eyes and ears of a world on fire”. The organization stated that so far this year there have been 61 deaths in acts of service, many of them occurred in contexts of conflict or emergency.
“The Journalists are killed, harassed, intimidated, imprisoned or silenced, from Gaza and Ukraine to Sudan, Myanmar and other places,” Türk said.
This phenomenon not only represents a threat to the lives of journalists, but also directly affects the right of all people to be informed and express yourself freely.

Türk asked the governments intensify their efforts to prevent these attacks, ensure the safety of journalists and prosecute those responsible.
The high commissioner urged all people and governments with influence to “intensify action to put end to impunity for crimes against journalists”
