Do you want to work in a fairytale castle? The Hanovers publish a job offer

Built between 1858 and 1867 by Conrad Wilhelm Hase, one of the most influential architects of the time, as a birthday gift from King George V of Hanover to his wife Maria Saxe-Altenburg and has always been the headquarters of the House of Hanover in Germany. Ernst of Hannover (father) married there for the first time, in 1981, and Prince Ernst of Hannover (son) celebrated his wedding with the Russian designer Ekaterina Malysheva and one of the most successful non-English speaking series in recent months has also been filmed, Maxton Hall. With more than 600 rooms and an inventory of 20,000 collectibles, the castle needs a director to undertake the rehabilitation that was unleashed by the Hannover family’s last storm: the job offer has already been published.

Although it is a fairytale palace surrounded by forests that offer a landscape that changes with each season of the year, Hannover Castle has most of its wings closed to the public and affected by serious construction defects. Even so, they assure that the visit is worth it and announce that new areas of the castle will progressively be opened, all as the great rehabilitation plan promoted by Ernst August of Hannover, which transferred the property to the German State for the symbolic amount of one euro in exchange for a restoration with public funds of 27 million euros and which they estimate will last until 2031, being optimistic.

This is one more step in a long path that began in 2018 when the eldest son of Ernest of Hannover, as crown prince and thanks to the transfer of the fortress that his father made to him in 2004, chose to give up the property to the German State for a symbolic amount (one euro), after seven years of negotiations with the Minister of Science and Culture, Björn Thümler. This was the solution he found to maintain a unique cultural monument, but whose rehabilitation is enormously expensive and with this agreement it will be open to the public, surely as a museum, but other avenues are also being explored, such as the construction of a hotel.

“My family and I will remain closely linked to Marienburg Castle in the future and I am pleased to be able to work as chairman of the board of directors on the great project to preserve and develop this extraordinary cultural monument,” says Prince Ernst of Hanover through his page web. We must not forget that the transfer of this castle was a cause of dispute between father and sonsince Carolina of Monaco’s still husband did not agree with his first-born and made it known in court, that after two years of confrontation rejected Ernest of Hanover’s request to recover the properties which they had placed in the hands of their son alleging “great ingratitude”.

Among those assets in dispute was the property of Calenberg, in the municipality of Pattensen-Schulenburg; Prince Herrenhausen’s Palace, where his first-born son resides with his wife, Ekaterina Malysheva, and their three children; and the crown jewel, Marienburg Castle, the dynasty’s former summer residence south of Hanover.
