7 people accused of manufacturing deformed parts for a Boeing plane – Grupo Milenio

Seven people, linked to two companies in the Italian city of Brindisi (south), have been accused of manufacturing irregular parts and of “noticeably inferior” quality for a Boeing company airplanewhich could “impact security.”

The accused must answer for the crimes of criminal association, attack on transport security, environmental pollution and fraud, as reported by the Brindisi Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutors consider that these two companies – which have not been named – have provided parts “with notably lower static and stress resistance characteristics” to the Leonardo company.Aerostructure for the production of various parts of the ‘Boeing 787 Dreamlines’.

This, according to the researchers, could have consequences “on the safety of air transport.”

Specifically, the companies used pure titanium – and not the required alloy – for the parts of the aircraft structure that they had to build and the aluminum parts manufactured were “deformed”thus “saving on the purchase of raw materials.”

The investigations, carried out after an international request from the United States, have allowed the authorities confiscate around six thousand parts of the plane, which will also be examined.

A Boeing expert report has confirmed that some “non-conforming structural components could, in the long term, create damage to the safety of airplanes” Therefore, it has had to undertake an extraordinary maintenance campaign on the affected devices.

Both Boeing and the Leonardo company, specialized in the aerospace sector, have collaborated with the investigations as parties affected by the activity of the two companies involved.

A second part of the work of the Brindisi Prosecutor’s Office has revealed an environmental crime since the defendants were dumping waste on the land of the city’s industrial hub. “dangerous polluting substances” derived from metal production.

The agents of the Guardia di Finanza (Italian tax and border police) have seized 35 tankers with a thousand liters each of waste “dangerous specials” and another twelve empty.
