One cat far outweighs the other

Dear Dr. John,

I just had my two cats examined and vaccinated this week. To be truthful, I had not taken them to the vet for a few years since they were not due for any vaccines. They are completely opposite when it comes to their weights. My vet suggested that the male cat be placed on a diet since the cat weighs around 15 lbs. or more. He is 10 years old. The female cat, 13, only weights around 7 lbs.

They are fed the same dry food that has been left out and I have done it this way for years. The male cat does consume more and pushes the female out of the way of feeding at times, but she is also far more hyper and energetic. Both had great teeth which I was told is due to the dry food diet. Is there anything that you can suggest getting one to lose weight while fattening up the other? J.H.

Dear J.H.,

Let me start by stating that annual physical examinations for both of your cats are important to stay ahead of any possible developing health changes. Vaccines are very important, but it is the complete exam, and those diagnostics deemed necessary that are equally, if not more, important. Overweight cats are prone to problems like diabetes and cats that are too thin may be parasitized or have hyperthyroidism, as an example. Your veterinarian would advise on those matters.

The dry food is excellent at promoting good dental health, but it is not a panacea. Genetics also plays a role in dental health, and you are lucky that they both have great teeth given their ages. Since your main  concern was their difference in weight, let me suggest a few ideas. This situation is not uncommon in households with more than one cat. I would work with your veterinarian on selecting a good diet food for the male cat. One should always proceed with a steady weight loss plan.

Cats, like humans, can have different metabolisms and the same diet does not necessarily work for all. Your two cats may need different foods and feeding schedules. I would avoid leaving food out all day and feed them separately twice a day. After having their meals, put the food away after a half hour. That way you train them when to eat and can ensure who gets which food and in what amount. Good luck!
