The James family made history in the best basketball in the world and the Acrisure Arena in Palm Springs witnessed such an event. LeBron James and Bronny James entered the second quarter of the game together preseason game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix Suns, making them the first father-son duo in history to play at the same time in the NBA.
The game ended with a victory for Phoenix (118-114). LeBron finished as the leader of the Lakers with 19 points, five rebounds and four assists in 16 minutes; Bronny played 13 minutes and finished with a pair of rebounds.
“It’s surreal,” admitted JJ Redick, coach of the Angelenos, before the start of the game. “I feel very honored to be able to be part of history”. The move occurred as part of a strategy to test the nine-man rotation in LA and see the chemistry between both elements, in order to see their evolution in the team dynamic.
It was for a period of four minutes and nine seconds that the two players saw activity together, with a triple and a layup for LeBron, while Bronny received a pass from his father, but missed the attempt from the perimeter.
The first game between the two took place right in the rookie’s 20th birthdaywho was chosen with the 55th pick of the NBA’s Dradt in 2024. He comes from playing a single season at the university level with the USC Trojans, where he finished with averages of 4.8 points and 19.3 minutes, in a campaign that was marked from before that it began due to the cardiac arrest he suffered on July 25, 2023, during training.
The moment was anticipated
There was a lot of activity between father and son in the previous training sessions. The reactions were immediate, as D’Angelo Russell said Thursday during team practice. The point guard highlighted the dynamic between LeBron and Bronny, admitting that it is something unusual, but that little by little people will get used to it.
“There are father-son moments there. I respect it. I appreciate it. It’s a little different though because I’ve never seen that. Normalizing it right away is crazy. But I think for us to continue to see that, it’s becoming more normal to see those conversations and those encounters, it’s becoming normal.”
The Lakers have preseason games against the Milwaukee Bucks (October 10), Golden State Warriors (October 15), a reunion with the Suns (October 17) and a close against Golden State (October 18) before starting their regular season on October 22 against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
