Evan Ferguson gives promising update on ankle injury as Ireland striker declares he is ready to start vs Finland

EVAN FERGUSON insists he is fit and ready to start for Ireland against Finland on Thursday.

The Brighton striker has played just 130 minutes this season for club and country as he returns from an ankle problem suffered last March.

His only start was in the League Cup against Wolves, while he got more minutes with Ireland last month than he has in the Premier League at Brighton.

But the 19-year-old declared himself ready if needed for Heimir Hallgrímsson in Helsinki as Ireland look to get their first competitive win in 12 months.

Ferguson said: “We will have to wait and see. I feel good. I’ve been back now for a month or two, so I feel good, we will wait and see.”

He put his lack of Premier League minutes – three substitute appearances – down to new boss Fabien Hurzeler favouring others rather than a fitness issue.

And he reckons the new gaffer’s tactics at Brighton can benefit him.

He continued: “He’s not really set challenges, in a way.

“He’s just been talking to me, on what I can do, what needs to be done in his eyes to get playing, what he wants in his system, he’s not really set any goals, just to come back and play as I can.

“It’s hard to say if I can fit into it as I haven’t played too much yet, from the outside of things it probably looks like it might suit me better, on the front foot.”
