Owner Woody Johnson made the devastating decision to fire Saleh on Tuesday. after the fifth game of his fourth season after the team fell to 2-3 following a 23-17 loss to Minnesota in London on Sunday.
“This morning I informed Robert Saleh that he will not continue as head coach of the Jets”Johnson said in a statement released by the team. “I thanked him for his hard work over the past three and a half years and wish him and his family the best as they move forward.”
“This was not an easy decision to make, but we are not in the place we should be given our expectations. And I think this is the time to move in a different direction,” he added.
Saleh finished 20-36 as Jets quarterback, eager to end the NFL’s longest active drought without qualifying for the playoffs, 13 seasons. The defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich took over as interim coach.
This is the first time in Johnson’s 25 years as owner of the team he a coach is fired in the middle of the season.
The unexpected decision was made a day after Saleh said he felt confident thatQuarterback Aaron Rodgers and the Jets will be able to right the ship after losing two games in a row. The loss in London to the undefeated Vikings was Rodgers’ worst game with New York as he was intercepted three times.
“There is a lot left to play for,” Saleh said Monday. “We can improve in many things… I’m not panicking. “No one in this facility is panicking.”
But Johnson evidently ended up losing patience with Saleh and decided to make a change.
