The Argentine deputy of the Spanish leftist party Add, Gerardo Pisarello asked the Royal House, the president of Spain, Pedro Sanchez or the foreign minister, Jose Manuel Albarestake advantage of October 12, Columbus dayto apologize to Mexico for the “past crimes” during the Conquest more than 500 years ago.

The Tucumán politician once again pointed out the attitude “arrogant” and “pride” of the Spanish right and extreme right, that is, of the People’s Party (PP) and Voxto this request for forgiveness from the crown by the former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador and his successor, Sheinbaum.
Pisarello considered that this type of behavior “ashamed”given that in the 21st century the “radicalized” rights speak to America and Africa as if they were “the new encomenderos” and were “proud” of the “massacres” during the Conquest.
“Someone who maintains that racist and classist view of the past cannot have a respectful and fraternal view of the present and the future,” said the deputy and leader of the Catalan political force Comunes.
However, he pointed out that the attitude of PP and Vox does not matter and asked that the Royal House, Pedro Sanchez either Albares respond to the request of the Mexican Government, and also of Claudia Sheinbaum, regarding the October 12.
“We must ask for forgiveness, as other countries with a colonial past have done (…) And October 12 is a favorable occasion to do so, to recognize the crimes of the past,” Gerardo Pisarello insisted.
The former president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obradorsent a letter to Felipe VI in March 2019 demanding that “the Spanish State admits its historical responsibility” for the offenses committed during the conquest and “offer appropriate apologies or political compensation”a request that never received a response from the Royal House.
However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement in which rejected “with all firmness” the letter sent by López Obrador. Furthermore, he “deeply regretted that” the letter to the king had been made public.
Last week Santiago Abascalleader of the far-right party Vox, which represents a minority part of Spain, criticized the president of Mexico and López Obrador on the social network X for insisting on their request to apologize.
