Joe Root has surpassed Alastair Cook’s record of most Test runs for England, cementing his status as the nation’s greatest modern batter.
Root became the fifth-highest international red-ball run scorer ever by cracking a four back at Aamer Jamal, overtaking Cook’s 12,472 with his 71st run in the first innings of the first Test against Pakistan in Multan.
The 33-year-old still trails all-time leader Sachin Tendulkar by over 3,000 runs, but now only needs 905 more to topple Ricky Ponting in second.
Root also entered the all-time top five for Test scores above 50, joining Indian great Rahul Dravid on 99.
