Sheinbaum speaks out for the recognition of the State of Palestine – Millennium Group

The president Claudia Sheinbaum spoke out for the existence of two states: Palestine and Israel and former chancellor Alicia Bárcena recalled that Mexico condemned Israel’s disproportionate response against Gaza after the attack last year by Hamas on Israeli territory.

“We consider that the Palestinian State should be recognized in all its magnitude, like the State of Israel, that has been Mexico’s position for many years and that is the position that we have, and the search for peace above After all, war will never lead to a good destiny,” Sheinbaum said in his morning conference.

“We condemn any form of violence, first; At the time, Secretary Alicia Bárcena, who was Secretary of Foreign Affairs, first condemned this massacre and illegal detention of people carried out by a group of Palestinians and also later condemned the aggressions of the State of Israel, or the government of Israel, Palestine and today, what is happening in the world,” said the president.

He recalled that the then president Andrés Manuel López Obrador highlighted that what Mexico seeks peace and the United Nations should be much more proactive as an institution in the search and construction of peace.

Bárcena explained that, at the time, Mexico joined a request that Chile made to the International Criminal Court because the issue is that “it is true that Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, but it is also true that Israel’s response has been disproportionate.”

The chancellor of the last six-year term added that Israel’s counterattack has not only been disproportionate, but that has affected thousands of civilians in Gaza, Palestine as a whole and now in Lebanon.

“There is enormous concern. And I believe, Madam President, we raise it in the General Assembly (of the UN) now, that the key is for the Security Council to eliminate the veto because that Security Council is not operating because it is stuck in the vetoes,” he reproached Barcena.

“Recognize the State of Palestine, the United Nations has already done it, but the only solution to this conflict will be that there are two states and that is the idea that the international community has, but there is a risk, at this moment the international community is aware that there is an enormous risk in the expansion of this conflict to Lebanon and Syria, that can really complicate the Middle East a lot,” added the now Secretary of the Environment.
