England player ratings vs Pakistan as Carse stars but Smith lands dire 1/10

England were ruthlessly demolished by Pakistan spinner Noman Ali as they crashed to a 152-run defeat in Multan, with Ben Stokes’ slapstick dismissal summing up their struggles.

Chasing a vast target of 297 on a raging turner, England were bundled out for 144 with their skipper stumped after advancing down the pitch and accidentally launching his bat 20 yards in the air.

It was a grimly humorous moment, Mohammad Rizwan whipping off the bails as Stokes turned to see his GM blade disappearing towards square leg, and capped a chastening conclusion as the hosts levelled the series 1-1.

Here are i‘s player ratings for this Test.

Zak Crawley 3

Just 30 runs across the match was not a great return for the opener.

Ben Duckett 8

Brilliant first-innings century on this used pitch kept England in the game. Duck in the second innings.

Ollie Pope 4

Scores of 29 and 22 were hardly the contribution he needed to quieten down speculation over his place in the team.

Joe Root 4

What a difference a week makes. After his 262 in the first Test, the Yorkshireman failed twice here, scoring 34 and 18.

Harry Brook 2

Historic 317 in the first Test, but unable to score even 30 across his two innings this week. The first Test in Pakistan he’s not scored a hundred in.

Ben Stokes 5

Bowled 10 overs. Captained well and at least showed some fight scoring 37 on the final morning.

Jamie Smith 1

Drop of Salman Agha on day three proved costly and keeping way tougher on used track. Scored 21 and six. Tough Test.

Brydon Carse 8

England’s best bowler in the series. Put his body on the line and would have had more than five wickets but for dropped catches.

Matt Potts 5

Ran in manfully and did the hard yards when bowling 26 overs in the first innings. Three wickets overall.

Jack Leach 6

Another seven wickets takes his tally in Asia to 77, overtaking Derek Underwood and Graeme Swann for the most by an England spinner in this part of the world.

Shoaib Bashir 5

Outbowled by Pakistan’s off-spinner Sajid Khan. But second-innings four for 66 was at least an improvement on what had been a poor tour.
