Embattled Norfolk DA loses spokesman who quits amid multiple probes

The longtime spokesman for the embattled Norfolk DA has resigned as the office faces blistering scrutiny on multiple fronts — including from federal investigators.

David Traub told the Herald his last day was Friday after more than 25 years on the job.

“It was just time to go,” Traub said, adding he leaves DA Michael Morrissey’s side “parting as friends.”

He did not comment about the Karen Read murder case, the Sandra Birchmore murder case, the $200,00 Canton police audit, the dysfunctional Massachusetts State Police officers assigned to the DA’s office and the prosecution of blogger Aidan “Turtleboy” Kearney.

The MSP mess has resulted in multiple probes and the removal of Det. Lt. Brian Tully as head of the Norfolk DA’s detective bureau. The U.S. Attorney’s office has not commented on any other cases in Norfolk County, except the Birchmore murder where federal prosecutors accuse an ex-Stoughton cop of slaying of the pregnant woman.

An observer told the Herald a spokesman leaving isn’t good for Morrissey’s reelection chances, where he is already facing stiff competition with the election more than a year away.
