Real Madrid is reportedly intent on showing the utmost respect to while it attempts to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold. The European champion has made Alexander-Arnold it’s No.1 transfer target and will be able to open talks with the England defender from January.

Alexander-Arnold is into the final nine months of his current Liverpool contract and Madrid has been linked with a swoop for the 26-year-old for several months. Los Blancos’ need for a new right-back intensified earlier this month, too, when Dani Carvajal sustained a serious knee injury that will rule him out until next season.

It is reported by Spanish outlet Marca that Madrid does not want to anger Liverpool in any way given the respect between the two clubs. It is reported that Madrid and Liverpool share a healthy working relationship and that the Spanish champion does not intend to overstep the line in its attempt to sign the England international.

Meanwhile, it was reported by DaveOCKOP earlier this week that Alexander-Arnold’s preference is to stay at Liverpool. The report said that talks between the Reds and Alexander-Arnold over a new deal are “progressing well” and that both sides are confident a deal will be done.

The news comes after it was reported by The Athletic that Madrid has made Alexander-Arnold, who is into the final nine months of his current Liverpool deal, its top summer transfer target at right-back ahead of the likes of Pedro Porro of Tottenham and Bayer Leverkusen defender Jeremie Frimpong.

Direct updates on Alexander-Arnold’s future have been few and far between and, speaking in September, the right-back explained why. “I have been at the club 20 years now,” he said. “I have signed four or five contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public – and this one won’t be either.

“The most important thing is trophies if I’m honest. I want to win trophies, I am a player who is highly motivated by winning things and being elite. If you have a personality that is an elite athlete who will do anything to win, then that is what drives them.”
