Chilean salmon, 70% of what is consumed in Mexico – Grupo Milenio

In the world there are two big players in production and export of salmon: Norway and Chile.

“Today we are number two in the world for salmon exports, so Chile has a lot to say and we also have other products that are from the sea such as ‘choritos’, which are mussels with which we are number one in exports and surpass to New Zealand, Spain and other countries that also produce them,” confirmed Marcelo Sobarzo, commercial attaché of ProChile in Mexico.

ProChile, institution of the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, promotes the consumption of fish and other foods such as sturgeon, oscetra and beluga caviarand Chilean mussels.

Globally, salmon production is expected to increase from 2.8 million tons in 2022 to more than 3.1 million in 2024.

“We want the consumer to know that Chile is more than salmon and we can diversify this export basket to the market. Our country is powerful as a producer, because practically from north to south it has access to the sea, only Santiago and some other regions in the central zone do not have a beach; We have a gigantic coast that is used a lot,” Sobarzo added.

“Chile is a market of 20 million people, and almost everything that is produced is abroad; The country has been concerned about having free trade agreements, therefore, we reach practically 5 billion consumers with products with tariff preference,” explained the commercial attaché. In Chile, an industry is beginning to develop and we need to get the products out, that is why it is important to promote them in the world.”

The interviewee pointed out that 70% of the salmon consumed in Mexico is Chilean“but they sell it to you as Norwegian; the positioning of salmon is very strong, the consumer is looking for healthier alternatives”.

For ProChile, Salmon is the food of the future due to its great propertiessince it is one of the fish with the least saturated fat and the highest content of fatty acids such as omega-3; It is a source of vitamins and minerals including potassium, selenium and vitamin B12, which maintain the proper functioning of the thyroid and intestine.
