Three Isle of Wight football teams were in action yesterday (Saturday October 19) with East Cowes Vics impressively progressing in the FA Vase over Fairford Town.
Cowes Sports and Newport were also in action over the weekend.

Fairford Town 0 – 2 East Cowes VicsÂ
Vics travelled to Fairford, Gloucestershire, putting together a team of 16 players for the occasion.
Fairford Town are in the league above East Cowes Vics, with the two sides meeting in the FA Vase first round proper.
The game started nervously, with each side assessing the other.
Raff Boyd-Kerr had a chance for Vics at 13 minutes played, while Joe Shutts’ effort for Fairford was saved by Alex Ram.
Vics then took the lead in the 16th minute, as Liam Triggs and Harrison Yates combined for a move to supply JACOB REYNOLDS, dispatching the ball into the top corner.
The visiting team were then in the ascendancy, with Liam Triggs, Harrison Yates and Jacob Reynolds all having chances.
Caleb Neale should have doubled Vics’ lead at the stroke of half time, only kept out by a brilliant save by Fairford goalkeeper Harrison Ellis.
The second half saw end to end action as Vics clung on to their lead, Alex Ram making a fingertip save in the 84th minute.
An unsuccessful penalty appeal from Fairford sealed their fate, and Raff Boyd-Kerr provided a defence splitting pass picked out CHARLIE HART to make the scoreline 2-0 to the visiting team.
East Cowes Vics now progress to the second round of the FA Vase.
Cowes Sports 1 – 0 Portland Town
The Yachtsmen hosted mid-table Portland Town in the Velocity Wessex Football League at Westwood Park on Saturday October 19.
Cowes Sports were only one place clear of the relegation zone coming into the fixture, needing a result to climb the table.
The game started nervously for Cowes, with Portland having two chances in the first three minutes.
The Yachtsmen then got going with a passing sequence in the 5th minute that saw Charlie Marsek cross from the right side of the box just too far for Scott McFarlane.
Portland missed two more big chances, as Cowes goalkeeper Hatt produced a brilliant save onto the post and Portland missed a header after a good ball into the box.
It was then Cowes’ turn to miss a chance, with McFarlane volleying over the bar on his instep after a Marsek cross.
In the second half, Cowes were denied a penalty shout before the Yachtsmen had three corners in a row.
With Cowes controlling the game but a crucial goal eluding them all game, deadlock was finally broken by CHARLIE MARSEKÂ in the 90th minute, slotting it into the bottom corner after a sublime run from Mumford.
The Yachtsmen travel to Laverstock and Ford next Saturday, now 13th in the Velocity Wessex Football League.
Newport IW FC 1 – 1 Cove FC
Seventh-place Newport hosted fifth-place Cove at Beatrice Avenue, with Newport’s Leon Pitman making his 100th appearance for the home team.
Early pressure from Newport saw the ball in the back of Cove’s net, disallowed by the referee for a foul on Cove’s goalkeeper.
Cove then opened scoring against the run of play in the 37th minute.
Newport had an early chance in the second half as Jordan Browne put a Joe Butcher corner wide, sailing inches past the post.
But it wasn’t long until MACAULEY WATTERSON met a corner by Josh Younie, levelling the scores up.
Despite substitutions, Port couldn’t find a winner, and the game finished 1-1.
Newport remain seventh in the table, with Cove dropping down to sixth.
