Wimbledon vs Newcastle postponed after floods cause sinkholes on pitch

AFC Wimbledon’s Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle United on Tuesday night has been postponed after “extensive overnight flooding” at the Cherry Reds Records Stadium.

Videos on social media showed sinkholes appearing near one of the corners of the ground in south-west London.

“There’s a lot of water damage around not only the pitch, but on the fringes of the stadium too,” local resident Sam Neve, who took one of the videos from his flat, told i.

“Walking around outside the ground, you can already see the effects with sewage water and residue all around.

“The pitch itself is set on top of a sand base, so it’s not surprising that the ground looks so bad after water logging. I would say the sink holes are probably not as bad as the photos look.”

The Dons’ stadium in London is now closed as a result, with a rescheduled date for the tie yet to be confirmed.

A statement on Wimbledon’s official website read: “We regret to inform supporters that due to extensive overnight flooding of the River Wandle and surrounding areas, including at our Cherry Red Records Stadium, Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup third-round fixture against Newcastle United has been postponed.

“More information will follow in due course regarding fixture rearrangement.

“The stadium is closed until further notice.”

The fourth round of the Carabao Cup is due to take place the week commencing 28 October.

Wimbledon reached the third round with a stunning penalty shoot-out victory over Premier League side Ipswich.

Newcastle also secured their spot with a dramatic finale on spot-kicks, beating Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
