Captain Bruno Fernandes has sent a message of encouragement to Manchester United teammate Leny Yoro after he took another huge step towards returning from injury.

Yoro, who joined United from French club Lille in summer, has been sidelined since fracturing his metatarsal in the opening game of the club’s pre-season tour against Arsenal in the United States on July 27. United, at the time, anticipated the defender would be sidelined for around three months, and he underwent surgery at the beginning of August.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News on September 6, Yoro was soon walking without crutches. The Frenchman then shared another encouraging update on social media on October 9, showing video footage of him on a treadmill at United’s Carrington training ground, posting the caption: “On the way back.”

Just under a fortnight on, United confirmed the defender is now back outside and on the grass at Carrington. United said there is still ‘plenty of work to do’ for the 18-year-old, who was also a target for Real Madrid in the summer, and that his return will not be rushed. He is yet to train alongside fellow members of the first-team squad.

Nevertheless, the fact he is back on the grass marks a significant juncture in the youngster’s recovery. He posted a video of Instagram to capture the moment, captioning the post with an hourglass emoji.

The post attracted a wave of responses, not least from United supporters, but also midfielder Fernandes, who is yet to play alongside Yoro since the latter’s summer arrival. Offering a message of encouragement, Fernandes posted: “Almost there kid,” accompanied with an emoji that featured love hearts for eyes.

Fernandes also posted the video Yoro had shared on his own Instagram Story, writing: “Almost time,” suggesting he is excited about the Frenchman’s return. United have warned that Yoro’s competitive debut for the club is ‘not imminent’.
