Jay de la Cueva and his first solo album at the Teatro de la Ciudad- Grupo Milenio

Mexico City /

A handshake was the welcome that Jay Cave He gave each journalist who approached him to be able to interview him and gather those sensations that have brought him dream days in which a nomination for the Latin Grammy adorns his pfirst album as a soloist.

The framework of the interview with MILLENNIUM It is the Esperanza Iris Theater, better known as the City Theater, in the historic center of Mexico City. It’s our turn, the cameras settle and the conversation begins, changing direction with each response: nostalgic, exciting and dreamy.

An discomfort that leads to the Latin Grammy

Jay de la Cueva has been a musician practically his entire life. Since I was little, offers were on the table to make a solo album, but no. Jay waited more than 30 years to venture on such a complicated mission, and in his words, uncomfortable.

“It’s a very nice moment. After abandoning something well-founded like bands, giving up is difficult and thinking that the foundations of this first album is doing the Desayuno Americano tour with this Latin Grammy nomination is something very nice. We are sowing something in love at the pace that goes naturally. I felt uncomfortable. One has certain ideas, you imagine making a first album in moments of great enjoyment, laughter and in an ideal plan, I would have liked it to be like that, but it was uncomfortable. The whole team I have was very empathetic to me,” Jay said.

For many people and fans of the former Moderatto, one may think that this album comes a little late in Jay’s career, but how late is it? The truth is that Jay grew up watching his father in rock ‘n’ roll bands and he felt something in them that didn’t completely let him separate himself from his own bands.

“For many people yes and that made me doubt, but there was something in me that my dad was in a band and the singer left, I felt like it was like betrayal and this is my story. It took me many years to make a solo album, but it is the right time, the times do not fail“he continued.

What does Coyoacán smell like?

Yes, Jay was surrounded by music since he was little. To the south of Mexico City, of the chaotic, noisy, unsafe, busy, surreal Mexico City, is Coyoacán. There, Jay was born and raised; He played soccer and went to school. The music outside his house sounded like freedom and a Mexico away from all these adjectives that I just wrote.

“It sounded alive, it sounded free. Me, on a bicycle in a country where we did not experience the insecurity that exists today, as a child you could go out and play soccer on the block, with the gang, very close to the San Lucas neighborhood. I went to a school around the corner from my house called Patricio Sanz, where I did my primary school. A simple, modest school; “I come from two incredible parents, always in favor of music and what I wanted to do,” he recalled after a not-so-brief pause in which all those moments passed through his mind.

At the service of music

This new facet of Jay de la Cueva is to return to feeling like a new person in the industry. Today, the phrase “first time” resonates in everything he does, like that presentation that will take place at the Teatro de la Ciudad next Friday, October 25.

“I am experiencing a personally strong moment and it has to do with the first times. Try not to have so many expectations. There are things that I miss about the dynamics that I already had with the groups and now they are the first times of many things. I changed the word fear to curiosity.”

But if Jay has done anything, it is give his life for music. And just as we have heard the phrase “in the service of the country”, he considers himself to be a musician “in the service of song.”

“I consider myself to be a musician at the service of song. I really like to think that, it’s something that is in my codes, but with the bands we have been at the service of music. I am very interested in continuing to learn so I can contribute,” he concluded.
