In recent years, multiple adaptations of classic tales have emerged. in horror films; such has been the case of the Grinch in The Mean One, Alice in Nightmare Land and the so-called Twisted Childhood Universe started by Winnie the Pooh: Blood & Honey, which will continue with terrifying films such as Peter Pan and Bambi.
This time, “Cinderella’s Revenge” arrived in Mexican theaters.; far removed from the other shared universe films, it presents a reinvention of the classic tale in which the stepmother and her daughters will push Cinderella to the limit to the point of deciding to take revenge on them in a bloody way and with the help of her Fairy Godmother.
In an interview with MILENIO, The film’s director, Andy Edwards, said he joined the project when the script was already finished. and the production had chosen part of the cast, but was excited about it being his first period film, an element that sets it apart from other horror adaptations with stories set in the present day.
“When you’re making a contemporary drama and you need to find props or costumes you can go to a local store and buy them as cheap as possible, but when everyone has to be from a certain period you have to be very careful, also with the place where you are filming and making sure that everyone looks good.” Said the director specialized in horror films, who also admitted that adapting a period tale on such a small budget was quite a challenge, but with fun included:
“It was a struggle, I’m not going to lie, but if you like the way 15 actors look characterized in the dance scene you can say to yourself: Ok, we are making a movie,” he added.
Many B-series horror films fall into unintentional comedy due to the low budget, but in this case Cinderella’s Revenge intentionally mixes horror elements with comedy elements.
Some of the comedy in the film falls mainly on the Fairy Godmother played by Natasha Henstridge (Species, 1995), for being a character with knowledge of several eras, implying that she has traveled in time; the director said that working with the actress they sought to create a mix of the Wizard of Oz and Doctor Who.
One of the main differences from the classic tale in this twisted version is that Cinderella He uses a mask to kill, an object that was essential to feed the character’s thirst for revenge:
“You still have to love Cinderella, she’s still a good person, You still want her to succeed, so this is a way to put a different face on Cinderella to go do bad things and then she can still be sweet and innocent,” Andy Edwards said of the decision to add a mask, a typical element of the slasher horror subgenre.
It is known that in the original story the stepsisters cut off their feet so that they could fit into the mythical slipper, But this film promises to have more disturbing scenes and hopes not to disappoint viewers as other B-movies have done.
“I am very excited to see it reach new places, I know that Mexicans They love horror movies, so yeah, I hope they enjoy it.”
