What happens when an agnostic sex-and-dating podcaster and a rabbi meet at a party?
It’s not the start of a bad dad joke but the premise for a new Netflix romantic comedy.
Kristen Bell and Adam Brody star as a lovestruck couple whose romance is up against the odds, from differing outlooks on life to sabotage from within their own families.
Creator Erin Foster admitted the show marks a watershed moment in her own writing career.
She told Tudum: “I was always a very cynical writer because I was a very cynical person and that’s where all my comedy came from and where my comedic perspective came from – failing at dating and failing at relationships and things blowing up and finding the humor in it.”
Nobody Wants This follows Foster’s change of perspective on relationships after falling in love with “a nice Jewish boy” and subsequently marrying him.
“This show is based on the only good decision I ever made”, she said, “but I realised that being happy is way harder than being miserable – there’s nothing to complain about.
“So, I created this show based on all the ways that finding the right person can be so hard.”

Nobody Wants This premieres on Netflix on Thursday 26 September.
All 10 episodes of the romcom will be available to watch from Thursday.
Viewers will need a Netflix subscription to watch, which costs from £4.99 to £17.99 a month in the UK.
What is Nobody Wants This about?
LA-based Joanne and her sister Morgan (Justine Lupe) have a sex and dating podcast. Noah is a recently single and slightly unconventional rabbi, with an eccentric elder brother Sasha (Timothy Simons).
The couple meet at a friend’s party and sparks fly but there are some major obstacles to overcome on the path to true love.
The show charts their unlikely relationship as they try to reconcile wildly different perspectives on life and deal with meddling families.

Kristen Bell
Kristen Bell stars as agnostic sex-and-dating podcaster Joanne, loosely based on the life of writer Erin Foster.
She rose to fame in the the 2006 film Pulse and has starred in Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Bad Moms. She also garnered a younger set of fans for her role as the voice of Princess Anna in Disney’s Frozen.
The 44-year-old also played Eleanor Shellstrop in The Good Place and voiced the titular narrator in the teen drama series Gossip Girl.
Adam Brody
Adam Brody is unconventional rabbi Noah who falls for Joanne in Nobody Wants This.
Early in his career, the 44-year-old actor played Seth Cohen in the hit teen television drama The O.C. and went on to star in Burning Love and StartUp.
He has also appeared in DC superhero film Shazam!, The Kid Detective and 2020 film Promising Young Woman.
Justine Lupe
Justine Lupe plays Joanne’s charming-yet-cutting sister and fellow podcaster Morgan in the Netflix show.
Lupe starred as Willa Ferreyra in the HBO series Succession and was Astrid Weissman in The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.
She has also appeared in the 2022 film Luckiest Girl Alive and television series Mr Mercedes.
Timothy Simons
Timothy Simons plays Noah’s older and slightly eccentric brother Sasha, who has an unstoppable delusional confidence.
Simons is best known for his role as Jonah Ryan in the HBO television series Veep.
He has also appeared in the 2016 film The Boss and as Pat Montgomery in the television series Candy.
