The San Sebastián Film Festival closed its official section this Friday with The Last Showgirla movie Gia Coppolagranddaughter of Francis Ford Coppola, with Pamela Anderson in the leading role.
The contest in the Basque city, in the north of Spain, also showed in the official section, although out of competition, the Spanish series Wantconfirming his love affair with the television format.
What is Pamela Anderson’s new movie about?
One day before presenting the awards at the closing gala on Saturday, the premiere The Last Showgirlthe last film to enter the competition for the Golden Shell, the award for the best film at the festival.
The third film by Gia Coppola, from the clan to which director Sofia Coppola also belongs, shows Pamela Anderson as an experienced Las Vegas dancer who must redefine her life when the show she has been working on for decades abruptly closes.
Coppola explained at a press conference that he “always” wanted to “make a film in Las Vegas” and that when the last “showgirls” show in the city closed he felt the time had come.
“I really wanted to learn more about this type of art form, which is so underrated and has so much quality“said Coppola, for whom the ideal person for his protagonist was always Pamela Anderson.
Anderson, who rose to fame for his role in baywatch (Baywatch in Latin America) but for years she was known more by the tabloid press, she said it was a “blessing” that Coppola offered her a role like this, which he thought he would never have at 57 years old.
“I always knew I could do more (…), it’s never too late,” he added.
The jury deliberates
The jury, led by the San Sebastian director Jaione Camborda, who won last year the Golden Shell with O Horndeliberates this Friday to define the winners, which will be announced at Saturday’s gala.
In the official section of this 72nd edition of the festival, which distributes the main awards, sixteen films compete.
The best received by critics have been Hard Truthsby the British Mike Leigh; Conclaveby the German Edward Berger; On Fallingby the Portuguese Laura Carreira; The sparklesby the Spanish Pilar Palomero; and Lonely afternoonsby the Spanish Albert Serra.
The Horizons sectiondedicated to Latin American cinema, closes this Friday with the screening of The aroma of freshly cut grassby the Argentine Celina Murga.
Fourteen co-productions from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela compete for the award for best Latin American film in this contest, considered a showcase in Europe for cinema from that region.
This year, the festival presented its Donostia Awards in recognition of his career in the film industry to the director. Pedro Almodóvar and the actors Javier Bardem and Cate Blanchett.
