‘Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me’ says Cillian Murphy as filming begins on highly-anticipated Peaky Blinders movie

IRISH actor Cillian Murphy has said “Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me” as filming officially begun on the much-anticipated Peaky Blinders movie.

The critically acclaimed BBC crime drama is making it’s return – but in the form of an exciting movie adaption.

Production has commenced today on the highly anticipated feature film – an epic continuation of the multi-award-winning gangster saga.

Peaky Blinders aired for six series and followed the exploits of the titular criminal gang in the aftermath of the First World War.

Set in the lawless streets of Birmingham in the 1900s, the show’s fictitious depiction is loosely based on a real gang which had operated in the city.

Irish actor Cillian Murphy played lead character gang leader Tommy Shelby in all six series.

The Cork star will be reprising his role in the upcoming film, as well as co-producing.

The film was written by the show’s creator, Steven Knight, who produces alongside Cillian, Patrick Holland and Guy Heeley.

While Tom Harper, who directed episodes in the first season in 2013, returns to helm the film.

And another Irish mega-star, Barry Keoghan, will also be joining the stellar cast.

Details of the Saltburn star’s role are being kept under wraps. 

Rebecca Ferguson, who’s best known for her central role in Dune, has also been confirmed for the film as well as Tim Roth.

The highly-anticipated movie’s plot and further casting has remained tightly sealed.

Speaking about the exciting new project, Cillian said: “It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me.

“It is very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders.

“This is one for the fans.”

Director Tom Harper has said: “There’s a great feeling of anticipation and excitement amongst our outstanding cast and crew. 

“We’re grateful to the fans for getting us to this point and believe this next chapter is going to deliver something extraordinary.”

While Steven Knight added: “I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II.

“The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders.”
