Cork City Fire Brigade rushed to the scene

According to RTE, three units of the Cork City Fire Services, as well as gardai and a HSE ambulance were called out to the scene at Grange Cottages.

Following a search of the house, an elderly man was discovered unresponsive in one of the rooms.

He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

It is understood that there was evidence to suggest that the fire, which was reportedly contained to one room, had started overnight but burnt itself out.

Members of the fire brigade secured the scene and left it with Gardai, who currently remain at house.

A garda spokesperson said: “Gardai and emergency services are currently at the scene of a fire at a residence in Douglas, Cork.

“As this is an ongoing incident, no further details are available at this time.”

A spokesperson for Cork City Fire Brigade said: “I can confirm that Cork City Fire Brigade attended the scene of a house fire today at 10.40hrs in the Douglas area of Cork City.

“Unfortunately there was a fatality. Crews made the scene safe.  The scene was left in the charge of An Garda Siochana.”
