Madrid, epicenter of European gastronomy

Madrid has become a world reference in gastronomy and tourism, and that has led the European Community of New Gastronomy to nominate her last March with this capitality. Yesterday, at the Royal Post Office, the activities and projects that have already begun to be developed on the occasion of this distinction, which will continue for the next 15 months, were presented.

Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president of the Community of Madrid, has claimed the great gastronomic development that the region has experienced in recent years.

The launch of the capital was attended by the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Diaz Ayusoand the co-president of the European Community of New Gastronomy, Rafael Anson. This recognition has been supported by the International Academy of Gastronomy, together with the National Academies of the different European countries.

During his speech, Díaz Ayuso emphasized that “the success of gastronomic tourism in Madrid it has an unstoppable reflection on the development of the hospitality industry in our region. The expenditure made in this area by international tourists who visited the Community of Madrid in 2023 exceeded 1,500 million euros, and among nationals we exceeded 700, and all of them seduced by the quality of the hospitality establishments. , for the kindness of its people, the speed, the dedication and the generosity.”

In the words of Rafael Anson: “Of course, gastronomic culture includes the basic elements of the new gastronomy of the 21st century. Aspects as important as healthy, supportive, sustainable and satisfying eating, reflecting a new way of understanding gastronomy. Furthermore, Madrid has stood out especially in the four links of the food chain: agri-food production, industry, distribution and commerce, and hospitality and restoration.”

In addition to standing out in the different links of the food chain (production, industry, distribution and commerce), Madrid is, currently, one of the leading cities for its gastronomy, thanks to the fact that it has some of the best restaurants, eateries, bars and taverns in the world. And there are many tourists who visit the capital, precisely to enjoy its large number of kitchens and gastronomic proposals in one of the most cutting-edge hospitality establishments not only in Europe, but throughout the world.

Together with Rafael Ansón and Isabel Díaz Ayuso, he has been Veronica Zumalacárreguijournalist and presenter, who has been in charge of explaining the projects and activities that are being developed during this capital status, and has highlighted “the important recognition that it represents for the city of Madrid.”

Some of them are the IV European Congress of Gastronomy and Tourism; the Gastronomy and Tourism Awards; the creation of two digital spaces, one titled “The Culture of Vine and Wine”, sponsored by Bodegas Marqués de Riscal, and another named “The Culture of the Beer”, with the sponsorship of Mahou. Also the launch of a “Virtual Dinner”, with a dish from each European country in video format; the publication of a healthy eating guide for Madrid, promoted by the Spanish Nutrition Foundation; or the preparation of a report on “The new legal framework for gastronomy” and another on “The new educational framework.”
