Premier League football fans notice hilariously Irish element to Goal of the Month for 2024/25 season

MARTIN Tyler once shouted ‘Drink it in’ while narrating one of the Prem’s most iconic moments when Sergio Aguero won Man City their inaugural title.

And football fans en masse have been doing just that over the past 24 hours after noticing the new sponsor for Goal of the Month.

The above tweet publicised that it’s Guinness who have become linked with the award for the 2024/2025 campaign.

That wasn’t the only delicious element for many onlookers either as summed up by one viral tweet.

Henry quipped: “It’s called the Guinness Goal Of The Month and they’re all screamers? By god I think we have our sport back.”

It has been equally noticeable how long-range shouting is back on the menu so far this campaign.

Plenty of commenters speculated that the seed for such a welcome trend returning to the game was planted by the recent ‘Barclaysmen’ trend online.

For those who (wisely) don’t spend much time on Twitter/X anymore, this was a nostalgic pattern whereby fans of a certain vintage would share highlights compilations of cult hero players from the 2000s.

One person posited: “Convinced this is because of the barcleysman trend.

“Players were watching those videos and having a pop for themselves rather than passing.”

In a similar vein Aaron channelled late-stage Jose Mourinho by jokingly calling the cracking set of nominees for September ‘Football ‘eritage’.

Lastly, Jakir replied: “Feels like football’s truly back when every goal’s a contender for Goal of the Month! Love to see it!”

The opening strike by Jhon Duran is probably the pick of the litter as he absolutely rocketed the winner home vs Everton from all of 30 yards to complete a 3-2 comeback.

Only two days ago the 20-year-old sensation rivalled it in Villa’s long-awaited Champions League opener against Bayern Munich no less.

Though it was from a comparable area of the pitch, this was a finish of far more nuance as he adeptly lobbed Manuel Neuer by taking on the shot far quicker than anyone expected.

The Colombian has developed a reputation for being a game-changer for Unai Emery’s men.

After a slow start to life in the West Midlands, Duran has come into his own over the past year.

HUNGRY LIKE THE OLE

And stats show he is on his way to becoming as effective as iconic impact sub Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Since his debut in January 2023, Duran has scored more goals as a substitute than any other Premier League player.

He’s netted ten goals off the bench in that period – two more than Arsenal’s Leandro Trossard and three more than Newcastle’s Callum Wilson.

So far this season, Duran already has the most goals as a sub, with five, out of any player across the big five European leagues.

It means he’s potentially on track to break the all-time Prem record, set by Chelsea’s Mikael Forssell on loan at Crystal Palace back in 2002.

Forsell scored nine times off the bench that campaign, with Duran needing another five sub goals between now and May to take the record.

Also on the list is Man Utd legend Solskjaer, who built his career around dramatic late goals.

Solskjaer scored eight goals as a sub during United’s treble-winning season in 1999, most memorably in the Champions League final against Bayern.

On the all-time Prem list of substitute goals, Ole is third with 29 behind Jermain Defoe and Olivier Giroud (both 31).

Duran arrived from MLS side Chicago Fire in 2022 for a fee of £14.75 million.
