Adulterated alcohol in Iran leaves 4 dead and 16 intoxicated – Millennium Group

At least four people died and 16 were poisoned due to the consumption of adulterated alcohol in the city of Rashtin the north of Iranmedical sources reported this Sunday.

“Four people between 22 and 40 years old died due to a severe poisoningprobably caused by ethanol or methanol,” announced the director of the University of Medical Sciences and Health Services of the Gilan province, Mohammad Taghi Ashubithe agency reported IRNA.

Ashubi said that a total of 20 intoxicated by alcohol were transferred to several hospitals with symptoms of lethargy, blurred vision and anxiety, of which four they lost their liveswithout specifying when the poisonings occurred.

The official indicated that six of the 16 people still hospitalized are in serious condition.

Why is alcohol consumption illegal in Iran?

Alcohol consumption has been prohibited in Iran since the triumph of Islamic Revolution of 1979, and its ingestion is punishable with 80 lashes, and its purchase, sale or preparation with between six months and two years in prison.

Still, they can be found smuggled imported drinks or homemade, which cause poisoning with some frequency when using products such as methanol.

In June 2023, at least 12 people died due to consumption of adulterated alcohol in the northern province of Alborz.

In 2020, there were more than 700 deaths Therefore, the vast majority are men between 14 and 78 years old.
