Alicia Bárcena will lead the Mexican delegation to COP16 – Grupo Milenio

The Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, will lead the Mexican delegation that will attend the 16th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the agreement on Biological Diversity, which will take place in Cali, Colombia.

The event aims to reverse the loss of biodiversity through the international cooperation and the sustainable development of countries.

In a statement, the Semarnat reported that the Mexican delegation will analyze effective strategies and action frameworks to guarantee the permanence of biodiversity and its restoration, and will share the 48 goals established in the National Biodiversity Strategy (Enbiomex) for compliance with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

On October 29, the secretary will participate in the plenary session of COP16, in the ministerial dialogue on the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework and in the meeting on routes for the effective implementation of the Escazú Agreement. Later, on October 30, he will speak at the high-level meeting on biodiversity and climate change.

It will also participate in negotiations that include the adoption of a global action plan on biodiversity and health; the integration of conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in productive sectors; and the sustainable management and use of wildlife species to avoid overexploitation and illegal extraction of biodiversity.

The Mexican delegation Accompanying Secretary Bárcena is made up of the Undersecretary of Planning and Environmental Policy, Marina Robles García; and by the head of the International Affairs Coordinating Unit, Camila Zepeda Lizama; as well as the director of International Cooperation and Implementation of the National Commission for the Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (Conabio), Hesiquio Benítez Díaz; and the director of Synergies for International Affairs and Commitments of the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (Conanp), Eduardo Robelo González.

COP16 “Peace with Nature” brings together government representatives from 196 countries, who will analyze strategies to ensure the effective implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and its 23 targets adopted in 2022.
