Badenoch faces Tory backlash for claiming maternity pay is ‘excessive’

Kemi Badenoch faced backlash at the Tory party conference this weekend over comments she made about statutory maternity pay.

The Tory leadership contender initially claimed on Sunday that it was “excessive,” adding that the Government was doing “too much” on statutory maternity pay.

Badencoh told Times Radio: “Tax comes from people who are working: we’re taking from one group of people and giving to another. This, in my view, is excessive.”

Badenoch backtracked on the comments, though they were seized upon by leadership rivals Robert Jenrick and Tom Tugendhat.

The Conservative Party autumn conference continues today.
