BOH presents its first album, ‘People don’t understand each other by talking’ – Grupo Milenio

From the need to express something and not being able to do it completely, from that “impossibility inherent to language”, music arises. BOHduo formed by MElissa Romero and Andy Rivero who has just released his first album, LPeople don’t understand each other when they talk.

11 songs, now available to listen to on Spotify and Apple Music, crossed by that “difficulty expressing emotions or feelings”Andy explains in an interview with MILLENNIUM. “It is also a form of not to belittle the misunderstandingvery interesting things emerge from there,” he adds.

In its sound, People don’t understand each other when they talk. mixes folk with electronic music. And it positions the synthesizer as a bastion instrument. As for essence, I like to think that the music is fresh and has a lyrically different perspective“, says Melissa.

The meeting between Andy and Melissa to shape BOH happened in a ““very natural,” he says, explaining: “Melissa had her individual project, I had mine, and at one point we found that we had more collaborative projects than individual songs.”

“Andy would show me songs and we would complete them. There we realized that we work well together.“, she adds.

In November 2020, they collaborated on the topic By your side. But BOH’s formal debut occurred in April 2023 with the song QI’m going to see you (the track that opens the album).

“They’ve told us that some of the songs make them cry, that they surprise them, that they take them on a sonic journey from start to finish when listening to the entire album,” says Melissa about the impressions of her listeners, which number in the thousands on social media.

Knowing that his fan base is expanding -, Andy highlights the role of music “as a place of catharsis“; something that may not change the world, “but it will modify micro behaviors.”

For us it is important to make the music we like. Obviously we listen to the people around us, we have a team that supports us, but we like to make music that connects with us,” Melissa says.

They start from the above to affirm that current creative trends, which seek the favor of the algorithm and those hooks of the initial 5 seconds to go viral, do not “corner” them.

“I’m not going to say that we don’t feel them, but they don’t condition us in a big way,” says Andy.

Melissa believes that releasing an album is just a way to privilege one’s own vision in the midst of a logic where singles abound: “I’ve always been a fan of records, in the 2000s that’s what we had. So, is to appreciate a complete work. We released some (singles) as well, but we had to go back to that format.”

Among the tracks from their album, which they recently accompanied with an ‘official visual’ on YouTube is Flee in time. And the story behind it comes from a personal experience of hers: “It arose from a breakup with an ex“I was left with a feeling of sadness because I felt that I hurt him by not running away in time. I remember that I went to Andy, I explained this feeling to him and that’s where it came from.”

“It also talks about how there is no exact moment to leave a relationship. I relate it to a phrase that says ‘The decision is in the realm of madness’, one day you wake up and understand that this cannot continue,” Andy adds.

— And how do you understand music in an emotional sense? There are those who consider it a tool, a balm…

— EIt is an almost spontaneous form of expression. What I find in music is an alternative to discursive dialogue, to conversation, to writing; there is a very metaphysical, at least curious, complement between music and lyrics. It is not the same to recite the lyrics and listen to the music separately, it seems to me that it is a very unique communicative combination.

BOH will close the year with showcases to present the album in Monterrey and Mexico City. In addition, it overtakes MILLENNIUM that in 2025 there will be many more compositions that start from the difficulty of expressing emotions, because “A second album is coming, we are already working on it.”
