The chocolate businessman and former president of the National Chamber of the Processing Industry (Canacintra), Raúl Picard, revealed that the chocolate price will rise between 30 and 40 percent in 2025, derived from the rise in the value of raw materials.
“It is a very strong impact worldwide, not only in Mexico but in the world, since cocoa is a commodity and this increase hits us all,” he warned during the Annual Meeting of Industrialists (RAI).
What prices does cocoa have?
He mentioned that this increase in cocoa prices has been occurring since the middle of the year, although due to the contracts that have been established, it has not been possible to apply said increase in the final consumer price.
The businessman assured that this increase in the raw material is 188 percent, because cocoa was at a price of 2,500 dollars per ton and is currently at a price of 7,200 dollars.
However, he highlighted that, in June, the price of cocoa stood at up to 11 thousand dollars, so it is necessary to close contracts for the supply of the product for the following year.
In addition, he commented that, regarding the prices of substitute chocolate, which is made from cocoa powder and vegetable fats such as palm or coconut oil, they will remain the same because it is an imitation, although he predicts that it will sell more due to because its cost will not increase.
Regarding the exchange rate, he stated that a depreciated peso is beneficial for the chocolate industrysince they compete directly with products from abroad.
“We are competing with everything that comes from abroad, when it had dropped to 16.50 pesos per dollar, it hurts us a lot because in Mexico things are not moving, but imports are, which are very cheap and this hits the national market. ”, he indicated.
