Congress of Quintana Roo approves recovery of railway service – Grupo Milenio

The State Congress approved a constitutional reform that restores the right of the Mexican State to use railway tracks to offer passenger transportation service, consolidating it as a strategic activity of the State.

The proposal, approved unanimously by the 18th Legislature, seeks to align federal reforms with local reforms, establishing as a state responsibility the modernization and rehabilitation of the railways that cross its territory.

Deputy Jorge Sanén Cervantes, president of the Government and Political Coordination Board (Jugocopo), assured that the reform represents a decisive step in the modernization and recovery of the passenger rail service.

“The recovery of passenger rail transport will also bring with it multiple benefits for Mexicans such as: transportation safety, a better quality of life, reduction of the carbon footprint, access to transportation services for isolated communities, among others,” he said.

He recalled that in 2018, under the administration of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the vision of revitalizing rail transportation with a humanistic purpose was resumed with projects such as the Mayan Train, which not only benefits the State but also the entire population of the country.

With the approved reform, the Federal Government will have the capacity to grant concessions to public entities, states and municipalities for the provision of passenger rail transport, which means that the Mexican State will recover the possibility of publicly operating these roads, generating a service that responds to the needs of citizens.
