The trend of a healthier eating in Mexico it generated a growing demand for sweetener alternatives to stop consuming sugar.
According to Statista figures, in 2023 this type of product will reach a value in the national market of 19.62 million dollarsyes, 150 percent higher than what was reported in 2019, before the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The cConsumers seek to follow healthier diets and they experiment with alternative sweeteners that could be perceived as healthier, such as honey,” said the consulting firm Euromonitor Internacional.
In fact Statista projects that for the next five years will grow at an annual average of 14.95 percent the sale of these products, so in 2029 it could reach a value of 48.5 million dollars.
In this context the Mexican firm moves Xilinatwhich seeks to gain space with its product made with corn xylitol.
Isabela Fernández and Javier Larragoiti, founders of the company, explained that this year their goal is to achieve sales of 400 thousand dollars and be able to lay the foundations for a production complete in Mexico and in 2025 close with 800 thousand dollars.
In addition, they estimate that by 2025 they will be able to export their product to the United States.
“This year we have two very big objectives, for the first time we want to double our income, (…) we want to make an investment round that will be to continue the development of the production process,” Larragoiti explained.
They reported that they managed to collect 600 thousand dollars in a capital raising round; 60 percent of said financing will be used in his laboratory and 40 percent in projects to increase his income.
Currently, they have to import the xylitolwhich is why the disparity in the exchange rate affects them, but their plan is to be able to do it themselves in the country, which would make their production up to 40 percent cheaper.
