‘Cool, showery with occasional sunny spells’ – Met Eireann confirm ‘heavy’ rain and sun on way this week as temps drop

MET Eireann have said “heavy” rainfall and sunny spells are on the cards this week – as temperatures are predicted to fall throughout the week.

Today will start with a mixed bag of sunny spells and scattered showers, after 65mm of rainfall in Co Cork caused flooding chaos yesterday.

Rain is expected to develop later this evening with temperatures of 14C to 18C.

Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather said: “A little red sky this morning with some showers in the south and a mix of sunny spells and scattered heavy showers today.”

Met Eireann meteorologist Linda Hughes said: “Today there’ll be a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, some turning heavy.

MIXED BAG

“Rain will develop in the southeast late this evening.

“Highest temperatures of 14C to 18C in a light to moderate south to southeast wind.”

Tonight will see continued outbreaks of rain in the southeast with isolated showers in most areas.

Mercury is expected to drop to 7C to 12C as rain will extend further west and north over night.

Hughes continued: “Clear spells and isolated showers in most areas early tonight, but, there’ll be cloud and outbreaks of rain in the southeast.

HEAVY RAIN

“That rain will extend further to the west and north overnight.

“Lowest temperatures of 7C to 12C with light to moderate east to northeast winds.”

Tomorrow will see the best of sunny spells in the south with cloud and outbreaks of rain throughout the day.

Heavy rain is predicted for the southeast with temperatures cooling to 13C to 16C.

The forecaster explained: “Tomorrow, Tuesday, will be mostly cloudy with outbreaks of rain, best of any sunny spells will be in the south.

“Some heavy showers are possible in the southeast later in the day.

SUNNY SPELLS

“Highest temperatures of 13C to 16C with light to moderate northerly winds.”

Wednesday morning will see outbreaks of rain across the northwest and southeast on a cloudy morning.

The day is expected to see sunny spells develop later on as temperatures drop to 9C to 14C.

Hughes said: “It’ll be quite cloudy on Wednesday morning with outbreaks of rain mainly in the northwest and southeast.

“It’ll become drier and brighter as the day goes on, with sunny spells developing in many areas.

“A cooler day, with highs of 9C to 14C with a light to moderate northerly breeze.”

WEEKEND OUTLOOK

Thursday is expected to be mostly dry with sunny spells – but some showers will hit the north and north west.

Friday is predicted to be cloudy with scattered showers in the north and west – with drier spells in other areas.

The forecaster explained: “Thursday will be mostly dry with sunny spells but a few showers will drift into the north and northwest on a light to moderate north and northwest breeze.

“It’ll be cool, with highest temperatures of 8C to 12C.

“On Friday it will be cloudy with scattered showers in the north and west, but drier with sunny spells in other areas, highs of 9C to 13C.”

The Met Eireann forecaster said the weekend outlook is: “Continuing cool and showery on Saturday with occasional sunny spells, then turning cloudier with rain and showers on Sunday.”
