‘Dream is over’ – Cult Ireland ace, 35, retires in emotional statement as fans hail ‘fantastic player in blue and green’

DAVE KEARNEY has announced his retirement from rugby – saying “the dream is over” in an emotional statement.

The brother of Rob Kearney, Dave ended his career with the Chicago Hounds, for whom he signed in 2023.

In a statement on Twitter, the 35-year-old said: “And just like that, the dream is over!!

“The time has come to hang up my boots.

“Thanks to everyone for their support over the last 15 years, my family + friends, my teammates and all the supporters, it’s been an incredible journey, one that I’m really grateful for.

“Thank you to the @HoundsChicago for an amazing opportunity to come and play, it’s been an unreal experience, one I’ll cherish forever.

“I’ve met some great people here, players + staff.

“I look forward to watching this club grow over the coming years. Look forward to what’s next”

Kearney played much of his career in the blue of Leinster, having made his debut in 2009.

He ended his tenure at the RDS with 185 appearances and 55 tries, winning three Champions Cups, six Pro14 titles, and the 2013 Challenge Cup.

“Nothing you didn’t win in a blue but you left just as big a legacy off the pitch and with those that met you and worked with you.

“Enjoy the next chapter.”

At international level, Kearney earned 19 caps for Ireland, starting with his debut against Samoa in 2013.

He played in every minute of the 2014 Six Nations, helping Ireland to win the title, and started in four of their games at the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

The IRFU Twitter account said: “A fantastic player in blue and green. Always gave everything on the pitch. Thank you @kearney_dave”

These were but two of numerous tributes to the Dundalk-native.

Irish boxer Michael Conlan posted: “Congrats on an amazing career Dave! All the best in the next steps.”

Legendary ex-rugby referee Nigel Owens said: “Congratulations on a great innings. It was always a pleasure and best wishes for the future”

Archie said: “You will always be my hero!!!! Loved watching every minute of you play.

“Scoring all those tries, that face of yours and being so humble and kind to everyone you meet. You will go down as an absolute legend”

Someone else said: “Always enjoyed watching you play …you were also very good to my son when we would see you out and about in Dublin with pictures etc …enjoy the rest of it Dave”

And brother Rob simply tweeted two love hearts – one green and one blue.
