First case of new mpox variant detected in Germany – Milenio Group

A case of the new variant of mpox virus (formerly known as monkeypox) has been detected in Germany in a patient who had traveled abroadas reported this Tuesday by the Robert Koch Institute (Rki).

“On October 18, 2024, an infection with the new clade 1b that was acquired abroad was detected in Germany,” the institution stated on its website, referring to the new type of mpox virus.

The Rki added that he will continue his work of closely monitoring the situation and that at this time the health risk of the vast majority of the population in Germany is “small”.

Last August, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the current mpox outbreak in Central Africa, caused by the new and more lethal variantas a public health emergency of international scope.

Last week, the health agency of the African Union (AU) reported that to date some 1,100 deaths and 42,438 infections in its 18 member states.
