Fernando Gómez Mont, former Secretary of the Interior during the six-year term of Felipe Calderón, separated the PAN administration from the former Secretary of Public Security, Genaro García Luna, sentenced to more than 38 years in prisonmentioning that “there is a difference between your case and the government as a whole.”
“That being the case, if it is true that (Genaro) García Luna obtained money to protect certain organizations from drug trafficking, this was not definitive because other elements within the government detained them and extradited them.
“So you have to understand that “There is a difference between the case of (Genaro) García Luna and the case of the rest of the government, the government as a whole, and confusing them at least seems like a gratuitous or worthless or superficial analysis,” he said.
In an interview with Magda González for MILLENNIUM Television, the former official also pointed out that the testimonies revealed in the trial against García Luna in the United States “they are not enough” when mentioning that they have to be accompanied by evidence that demonstrates whether they actually provided protection to organized crime groups.
Gomez Mont highlighted that Garcia Luna He served as Secretary of Public Security until the last day of the administration of Felipe Calderon and that on different occasions was recognized by the United States government.
However, he indicated that if there is evidence that García Luna was involved in crime, it would imply a “high degree of betrayal” by the elements of the security forces who lost their lives in the fight against organized crime.
“If this type of venality and commission occurred, it implies an act of betrayal since there were many public servants, sailors, soldiers, police officers who lost their lives in the fight against organized crime and any act to strengthen their enemies implies a degree high of treason.”
