The presidential candidate of the Venezuelan opposition, Edmundo González Urrutiaappeared briefly this Saturday at a demonstration in Madridwithout addressing the public, to claim his victory in the July 28 elections.

Two months before those elections, in which the opposition denounces fraud to favor the President Nicolás MaduroThousands of people gathered in the Plaza de la Gate of the Sunan emblematic place for many opposition figures in exile.

“Edmundo González Urrutia, elected president of Venezuela, in Madrid!”exclaimed the presenter of the event as the 75-year-old candidate took the stage with a Venezuelan flag, receiving cheers from “president, president!” by the attendees.

González Urrutia arrived heavily escorted, greeted some protesters and, before leaving, posed for a photo with the president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayusoand with the leader of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo.

The demonstration was part of a global mobilization of the opposition “for freedom“, which also took place in cities such as Seville and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Antonio Ledezma, former mayor of Caracas, did participate in the demonstration, reading a message from González Urrutia and attributing his absence to severe aphonia.

“On July 28, the people issued a clear and unappealable sovereign mandate in favor of change,” Ledezma said, adding that “the defense of that mandate requires that we continue united and active in this fight until the end.”
