IFT extends Telmex commercial concession for marginalized services – Grupo Milenio

The Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) resolved, in compliance with the Federal Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law (LFTyR), to extend the validity of the commercial use concession for services in marginalized localities, granted in favor of Telefonos de México, SAB de CV (Telmex).

The Ministry of Communications and Transportation granted the concession title in 2005, valid for 10 years, for which Telmex was the winner of the National Public Tender in order to provide social coverage in telecommunications.

Through a statement, the IFT detailed that the Secretariat provided a non-recoverable contribution to the assets of the Telecommunications Social Coverage Fund Trust and frequency bands of the radio spectrum, for the provision of services.

Services offered to marginalized localities

Due to the above, today there are no financial contributions by the secretariat for the provision of telecommunications services.

The purpose of this concession is to cover localities that have low levels of income and a deficit in home telephone services that are far from urban centers, which are located in areas of “high” and “very high” marginalization.

At the moment, Telmex provides its wireless access services basic residential telephony through a booth on public roads, data transmission and Internet access in different locations in the national territory.

The extension of validity granted by the Institute will be for five years starting on February 5, 2025. As soon as Telmex accepts the new conditions by the IFT, it will be able to continue providing its services in the national territory.

The statement highlights that the analysis of the request was carried out in strict compliance with the provisions of Article 113 of the Law, which is why the compliance that said concessionaire has given to the measures that were imposed as a consequence was not subject to review. of its character as Preponderant Economic Agent (AEPT) in the telecommunications sector.

Telmex may continue with the telecommunications service that it is authorized to offer in terms of what is currently established.
