Industrial parks seek to increase megawatt generation – Grupo Milenio

The Mexican Association of Private Industrial Parks (AMPIP) is proposing to increase the limits of distributed generation (rooftop solar) from 0.5 to five megawatts in order to obtain a greater supply of clean energy.

In a forum about nearshoringthe president of the AMPIP, Sergio Argüelles, explained that the objective is to have openness in matters of clean energy so that there is the possibility that the industrial parks themselves, with the potential they have, have the opportunity to self-generate through gas or solar cells.

Why is there an attempt to increase distributed generation?

“Right now only 500 kilowatts of energy generation by solar cells are allowed per company. Our proposal as an association of industrial parks is to increase and double this figure to one megawatt, because there are companies that have five thousand meters or ten thousand meters of roof. My proposal is to open it so that they can practically be placed on all possible roofs.”

Sergio Arguelles explained that there is very good reception from the federal government about this possibility of increasing the limits of distributed generation, since the current limit is “very little”, barely enough for basic needs, like turning on the lights.

“It is very little, but if we can increase it to five megawatts per company, it is generation that does not necessarily complicate or saturate the general network. So they are positive, and there is a very good reception from the government.”

The president and CEO of Finsa added that they recently began a process to raise a fund of 605 million dollars of capitalwhich will become a possible portfolio of two billion dollars of new product with organic growth.

“We have identified the areas that have worked for us: Tijuana, the Monterrey area, the Bajío corridors, and obviously we are attentive to other opportunities in regions that are being developed,” he concluded.

Sergio Argüelles assured that we are convinced that Mexico’s opportunity is enormous, since if we add up everything that Mexico has in Class A square meters, it reaches approximately 110 million square meters, which is equivalent to some cities in USA.

“Los Angeles or Chicago have the same number of meters that all of Mexico has, so the potential that the country has to produce, continue growing and continue investing is considerable,” he stated.
