To boost investments in the mexican countryside, Hector Lujanexecutive director of the company dedicated to the production and marketing of berries Hortifrutwarned that it is important to continue improving the road infrastructure and hydraulic dams.
“We must invest in these works, because our crops do not grow in big cities, but in rural areas that are often forgotten areas,” he commented in an interview with MILLENNIUM.
He stressed that companies like his have a great positive impact on communities, “but we have to go hand in hand with the development of government workscreating a better environment that attracts investment with the guarantees needed to promote, in a holistic and complete way, the well-being of the entire population.”
He highlighted that the phenomenon of relocation of productive chainsknown as nearshoring, is something that agriculture has been experiencing since the 90s, as many come to invest in Mexico to export to markets high consumption as USA.
“There is a very good workforce here and the climates do not lend themselves to production countercyclical in winter in the country,” he explained.
He valued that Mexico is “a great nation” for the business of berries: “I had to be part of the country’s foray into berry production of winter that began exporting mainly to North America and later to Europe”.
I agree that with the Ministry of Agriculture and Developmentas of May 31 of the current year, the national berry production maintains an upward trend and could even exceed what was obtained in 2023, since 397,234 tons, 73,58 tons and 129,448 tons of strawberries, raspberries and blackberries were harvested, respectively.
This activity benefits families by providing them with food and economic resourceswhenever it generates at least 500 thousand jobs direct in 21 entities of the country.
Of that number, he indicated, “the strawberry production contributes 38 percent Of the total sources of employment, raspberry offers 23 percentthe blackberry variety contributes 22 percent and the blueberry with 17 percent“.
