The 35-year-old said: “After 16 years as a Tipperary senior hurler I have decided that the time is right for me to announce my retirement from inter-county hurling.

“It has been a dream come true for me to have had the privilege and honour to wear the Tipperary jersey.

“I want to thank each and every player I had the opportunity to share the dressing room with, I will cherish the friendships made over the years and all the great memories.”

Maher is considered one of the Premier’s very finest servant, with a CV that lends that notion plenty of credence.

The Lorrha & Dorrha clubman made his senior debut in 2009, and went on to win the Liam MacCarthy three times, the Munster SHC five times, and two All Stars.

Paying tribute, the county said: “Tipperary GAA wish to thank Patrick for his outstanding commitment to the blue and gold jersey throughout the course of his career, and for the many great memories that he has left us all with.

“Patrick contributed in no small way to some of Tipperary’s great days and on behalf of all Tipperary supporters we wish him the very best of good fortune for the future.”

Lorrha & Dorrha were glowing in their assessment of Maher, whom he fired to an intermediate hurling crown in 2023.

The club said: “Congratulations to Patrick Maher on his 16 year career with Tipperary.

“Everyone in Lorrha is very proud of his achievements, and we thank him for all of the brilliant memories.

“Bonner won three senior All-Irelands, as well as All-Ireland minor and under-21 titles.

“He won two All-Stars and five Munster titles, and is an inspiration to everyone in the parish.”
