Why does ‘El Mayo”s lawyer have a conflict of interest?
The United States Attorney’s Office asked Brooklyn Federal Court Judge Brian Cogan to convene a last-minute hearing to review a potential conflict of interest in which Ismael’s defense attorney, Frnak Pérez, would find himself May Zambada.
In a communication sent to the judge less than 48 hours before the first trial preparation hearing against MayChief Prosecutor Breon Peace warned Judge Cogan that Frank Pérez, Zambada’s defender, continues to be the defender of the capo’s son, Vicente Zambada Niebla, The Vicentillo.
The problem with this, the prosecutor explains, is that The Vicentillo decided to become a cooperating witness for the United States government in exchange for a reduced sentence, and for this he agreed to testify at the trial of El Chapo Guzmán about his own father’s criminal activities.
